Homestay, once popular in rural areas, have now become big businesses in towns and cities nationwide. Thousands  of homeowners have discovered how to make money with their properties and avoid paying taxes. 

Melaka received 16.7 million tourists last year, which was the highest for the state, with the majority from China, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Over the next five to 10 years, the numbers are expected to grow significantly thanks to a massive integrated mixed development by, among others, Singapore-listed Hatten Land Ltd.
